The unique Townsite in Powell River was designated a National Historic District of Canada in 1995.
Built starting in 1910 to house pulp and paper mill workers, it currently has more than 400 original, historic buildings and is well worthy of celebration, as well as a two-ferry trip to go see it.
In 1992 the Townsite Heritage Society was formed with the mandate to "protect, enhance, maintain and promote the historical character and integrity of the traditional neighbourhood and business section of the Powell River Townsite by educating our children, adults and tourists".
They offer walking tours, workshops, and more, and they help owners of the Townsite homes restore and preserve their individual slices of this large piece of B.C.'s history.
