In the 1950s the government of B.C. introduced a new design of garbage can placed at rest stops along the highway systems in the province.
The original Garbage Gobblers were made out of concrete and were open on the back. A garbage can was placed just inside their mouth and travellers were encouraged to "feed" them.
Later models were made of fiberglass and had slightly different facial features. If you look hard enough you can still find a couple of the original roadside gobblers in the interior.
A few years ago the Ministry of Transportation brought some new Garbage Gobblers into the world. A painted version of an existing design of garbage can, they lack the original wackiness but still represent a piece of our province's history.
