Dave Barrett was the 26th Premier of British Columbia, serving from 1972 to 1975. He de-throned the longest-serving Premier in our province’s history, W.A.C. Bennett, and was the first NDP candidate to become the leader of B.C.
Soon after he was elected he famously asked his ministers “are we here for a good time, or a long time?”, signalling that he knew his party wouldn’t be in power for long and that he wanted to bring in as much change as he could over a short period.
His government worked quickly, passing a total of 367 bills. They formed the Labour Relations Board, the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, and the Agricultural Land Reserve. They banned corporal punishment in schools, passed the B.C. Human Rights Code, and raised the minimum wage.
The definitive book on Barrett’s time in office - written in 2012 from a supporter’s point of view - was co-authored by John Horgan’s current Chief of Staff, Geoff Meggs, and labour reporter, Rod Mickleburgh.
Barrett passed away on February 2nd of 2018.
