Bill Vander Zalm was the 28th Premier of British Columbia, serving from 1986 until 1991. He was our last Premier to serve under the long-ruling Social Credit Party, his time in office being cut short as he resigned due to a conflict of interest controversy over the sale of his business, the Fantasy Gardens amusement park in Richmond.
His political career also included time as an alderman in Surrey from the 60s until the 70s, and an unsuccessful bid for mayor of Vancouver in 1984, running as the NPA's candidate.
Vander Zalm's latest claim to fame was as the face of the successful campaign to do away with Gordon Campbell's poorly-rolled-out HST tax in 2010.
His trademark expression was, and will always be, "FANTASTIC!".
